If you're earning money in Australia, the answer is almost always yes.

You'll need a TFN if you plan to:

• Work for an employer

• Lodge an Australian tax return

• Open certain investment accounts

• Apply for government services (in some circumstances)

The good news is that applying for a TFN is completely free.

Before applying, have the following ready:

• Your passport

• Your Working Holiday Visa details

• An Australian postal address

• An Australian phone number (recommended)

​Your TFN is unique to you and you'll keep the same number for life, even if you leave Australia and return years later. ​

 

Treat it like any other important personal information and only provide it to trusted organisations, such as your employer, bank or the Australian Taxation Office.

You can apply once you've arrived in Australia and have a valid visa.

The process is completed online and usually only takes a few minutes.

 

Your TFN will then be sent to your Australian postal address, so make sure you have somewhere secure to receive your mail.

​Most TFNs are issued within a few weeks, although processing times can vary. ​

 

Don't panic if you've already started working before your TFN arrives.

 

You can simply provide the number to your employer once you've received it.
