Do I have to pay tax in Australia?

Yes. If you're working in Australia, you'll usually pay tax on your earnings. The amount depends on your income, visa type and whether your employer has your Tax File Number (TFN).

What is a Tax File Number (TFN)?

A TFN is your personal tax number issued by the Australian Government. You'll need one to work legally and to avoid paying a higher rate of tax. Applying is free and can be done online.

How do I check my super balance?

You can check your balance by logging into your myGov account (linked to the ATO), contacting your super fund directly or using your fund's app.

Can I claim my super when I leave Australia?

Yes. Most working holiday makers can apply for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) once they've left Australia and their visa has expired or been cancelled.

When is the Australian tax year?

What is superannuation?

Superannuation (or "super") is money your employer pays into a retirement savings account on top of your wages. If you're eligible, your employer must make these contributions for you.
