Brisbane often gets overshadowed by Sydney and Melbourne, but honestly? It deserves a lot more credit.

It's warm almost all year round, people are generally laid-back, and life feels a little slower in the best possible way. If Sydney feels fast-paced and Melbourne feels trendy, Brisbane feels like that friend who always seems relaxed and has their life together.

It's also a brilliant base for exploring some of Australia's most beautiful beaches and islands. Whether you've just arrived or have been here for a while, here are some experiences you definitely need to add to your Brisbane bucket list.

Spend a Day at South Bank

If there's one place you'll probably end up visiting again and again, it's South Bank.

With restaurants, markets, riverside walks and even a man-made beach right in the city, it's one of the best spots to spend a sunny afternoon.

Pack a picnic, grab an iced coffee and enjoy the sunshine.

Because yes, you'll quickly become one of those people who complains when it drops below 20 degrees.

Swim at Streets Beach

Speaking of South Bank, swimming at Streets Beach is a bit of a Brisbane rite of passage.

A beach in the middle of the city sounds slightly bizarre, but somehow it works.

It's the perfect spot when you want beach vibes without travelling too far.

Watch the Sunset from Kangaroo Point

This is one of those places that makes you stop and think, I can't believe I live here.

Bring some snacks, sit by the cliffs and watch the city skyline light up as the sun goes down.

It's also a lovely place to catch up with friends or simply have a little moment to yourself when life feels overwhelming.

Take the CityCat Along the River

One of the best ways to see Brisbane is from the water.

The CityCat ferries are part of the public transport system, but it genuinely feels more like a sightseeing tour.

Hop on, enjoy the views and explore different parts of the city.

Visit Moreton Island

If you're looking for a weekend adventure, Moreton Island absolutely deserves a spot on your list.

Think crystal-clear water, sand dunes and shipwrecks.

Some of the most popular things to do include:

  • Snorkelling the Tangalooma Wrecks

  • Sandboarding

  • Spotting dolphins

  • Spending the day on beautiful beaches

It's one of those places that doesn't quite feel real.

Take a Day Trip to North Stradbroke Island

Known by locals as "Straddie", this island is a must.

You'll find stunning beaches, beautiful coastal walks and, if you're lucky, whales and dolphins.

It's perfect if you need a little escape from city life.

Explore Eat Street Northshore

Eat Street is one of Brisbane's most popular night markets and for good reason.

Expect:

  • Food stalls from all over the world

  • Live music

  • Fairy lights everywhere

  • A really fun atmosphere

Come hungry because you'll want to try absolutely everything.

Visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Because let's be honest, most people move to Australia hoping they'll eventually cuddle a koala.

Lone Pine is one of the best places to see native Australian wildlife.

You'll also find kangaroos, wombats and plenty of other animals.

Do a Weekend Trip to the Gold Coast

One of the best things about living in Brisbane is how close you are to other amazing places.

The Gold Coast is less than two hours away and makes the perfect day or weekend trip.

Think beaches, rooftop bars and sunny afternoons with friends.

Hike to Mount Coot-tha Lookout

For one of the best views over Brisbane, head to Mount Coot-tha.

You can drive up or tackle one of the walking trails if you're feeling energetic.

It's especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.

Visit the Brisbane Markets

Brisbane has some lovely markets that are perfect for slow weekends.

A few favourites include:

  • Brisbane City Markets

  • Jan Powers Farmers Markets

  • South Bank Collective Markets

Perfect for grabbing a coffee and wandering around with friends.

Take a Trip to Noosa

Noosa is one of those places that everyone ends up falling in love with.

Beautiful beaches, coastal walks and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

If you're lucky, you might even spot dolphins or koalas in the national park.

It's definitely one for the bucket list.

Watch a Sunset by the River

One thing you'll quickly learn about Brisbane is that people make the most of the outdoors.

Whether it's after work drinks, a riverside picnic or simply sitting by the water, life feels very outdoorsy here.

Some of the best memories are often the simple ones.

Explore Fortitude Valley

If you're looking for nightlife, this is where you'll probably end up.

Fortitude Valley is full of bars, restaurants and live music venues.

Whether you're heading out for cocktails with the girls or dancing until late, it's a fun part of Brisbane to experience.

Have a Proper Weekend Picnic

Brisbane's weather makes it ideal for outdoor plans.

Grab some snacks, a blanket and spend the afternoon in one of the city's beautiful parks.

New Farm Park and the Botanic Gardens are particularly lovely spots.

Your Brisbane Bucket List Checklist

Before leaving Brisbane, try to tick off:

☐ Spend the day at South Bank

☐ Visit Moreton Island or Stradbroke Island

☐ Watch sunset from Kangaroo Point

☐ Explore Eat Street Northshore

☐ Take a trip to Noosa

☐ Ride the CityCat along the river

☐ Visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

☐ Spend a weekend on the Gold Coast

☐ Have a riverside picnic with friends

Brisbane may not always be the first city people think about when they move to Australia, but for many people, it quietly becomes one of their favourites.

Life here feels a little slower, a little sunnier and a little easier.

Of course, moving abroad still comes with its challenges.

You might still feel homesick sometimes. You might wonder if everyone else has made friends more quickly than you. You might miss your family, your favourite takeaway back home or simply having people around who know you well.

That's completely normal. Give yourself time.

Say yes to plans, explore new places and don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

Because one day you'll be sitting by the Brisbane River, surrounded by people who were once strangers, and realise that Australia has started to feel a little bit like home.
